Research Notes

Born 16 March 1738 (or 1739) in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland.

From the research of Katie MacLennan:

This John Durie was a cinderburner (information given about father’s occupation by the next John or by his descendants on his death certificate). Cinderburning was converting coal into cinders or coke for malting or drying grain. First a large fire was made, and when the mass was completely ignited and smoke driven off, the fire was covered up and extinguished, leaving the purified cinders in a fit state for malters.

By 1788 our John Durie was a widow. He appears in Session Records, denying allegations and bringing witnesses who testify to the drunkenness of his accuser.
