Research Notes
After having three children out of wedlock, Ann Stewart married John Tear, her first cousin once removed. John’s father Thomas was the brother of Ann’s grandfather, James. John was 15 years older than Ann.
Ann’s third illegitimate child, Christopher Stewart, was born one year before Ann and John married. He later took the surname Tear and seems to have been acknowledged by John as his son. Ann and John had five more children together.
