Research Notes
Although Peter Durie gave his mother’s parents names as John and Isabella, it is likely that he was mistaken or misinformed. We can find no record of a daughter born to parents of these names in or around 1806. Furthermore, these were the name of his own parents. Peter was one of Isabella’s youngest children and might never have met his grandparents or known their names.
There was, however, one Isable Blakie born in 1806 in Haddington, to parents Robert Blakie and Christian Beaton. Given the naming conventions of the time, the fact that our Isabella named her second son ‘Robert’ and her first daughter ‘Christian’ can be taken as strong evidence that we are looking at the same individual.
Further investigation on this subject is required.
